Sustainability Services

Franklin Engineering's multi-disciplinary expertise allows us to address sustainability issues with a comprehensive approach that benefits the environment and supports workplace and worker efficiency, as well as corporate financial objectives. Our staff can assist with site evaluations to target facility sustainability objectives, identify waste or operational bottlenecks, and design solutions that impact the bottom line. Most of our employees have plant operating experience in maintenance, operations or HSE, and this experience shows in our ability to achieve sustainability objectives during the various phases of project design and execution. We have assisted clients in setting long-term sustainability goals that target environmental and economic improvements. We have also used our multi-disciplinary engineering and technical staff to execute projects to improve manufacturing performance and resolve environmental issues. Franklin Engineering is able to provide a specialized service that not only assesses specific sustainability goals for facilities, but also draws on our broad technical expertise to design and execute solutions.

Several projects that demonstrate those capabilities are described below:

  • Developed an environmental status report and on-going sustainability strategy for two ammunition manufacturing facilities that identified current environmental issues and potential strategies to mitigate impacts and improve facility operation and compliance (VA and TN)

  • Implemented recommendations for pellet handling and de-bottlenecking of critical process operations to improve efficiency of workers and equipment (LA)

  • Developed recommendations and provided engineering support to mitigate flooding damages and improve building foundation support and performance (TN)

  • Performed engineering evaluation to optimize reactor scrubber efficiency and to utilize study results to specify and install scrubber system equipment (TN)

  • Performed feasibility study, concept and detailed design & installation of remote-operated scrubber improving worker safety and mitigating volatile process emissions (AL)

  • Developed documentation of inspection, testing and routine maintenance practices for equipment and devices associated with processes that must comply with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) and EPA Risk Management Program (RMP) requirements to enhance environmental compliance and worker safety (NE)

  • Implemented process modeling and emissions testing to demonstrate compliance for new regulatory requirements for polyvinyl chloride and copolymers production (KY)

  • Designed and installed a slurry mixing pit to optimize gypsum processing and improve dewatering operations (TN)

  • Performed an analysis of the environmental and economic impacts of reclassification of a process stream from hazardous waste shipped off-site to a beneficial use fuel stream reducing natural gas usage (WA)

  • Participated in an industry collaboration to develop a strategic approach for addressing PFAS environmental impacts. Evaluated previous and on-going PFAS research results, testing protocols, and  potential treatment options (Global)
